Meet the Makers

  • Sumaila

    Originally from Tamale, the northern region of Ghana. Sumaila is the eldest of three orphans. He is the right hand man to Amaya, working on the ground, oversees production, logistics, training, and any additional outreach Amaya organises for rural communities.

  • Forsuwa

    Single mother of four Forsuwa is a dress maker. Amaya has provided financial security, employment, equipment and support throughout the years to enable her not only to elevate hers and her children's lives, but also those less fortunate than her in her community.

  • Ayawi

    Originally from the Volta region, of Ghana he travelled to Accra to find work and provide for himself and his family. Amaya, provides him with the space, equipment and resources to create products.

    This transition is not just a change in economic strategy but also a powerful expression of community values. The newfound emphasis on uplifting the girl child and empowering women is heartening, and it's especially noteworthy that this movement is both driven and supported by the men within the community.

    NAFGEM is a community project empowering Maasai women in Tanzania who have overcome female genital mutilation (FGM). These resilient women have formed a collective to create and sell artisanal products, generating funding to support their families. Through their craftsmanship and determination, they are building a brighter future for themselves and their community.
